Waiting for the Road to Open

1:29 PM

So, four hours of walking without getting a lift. All the drivers look away, wave politely, even stick their thumbs up, or simply nothing passes by at all. How much longer? The approach route to the E1 is 73 km. That’s three days of walking, so I really wouldn’t mind a lift.

Uh oh, it’s starting to snow—and not lightly either. Luckily there isn’t much wind, so you can just keep looking ahead.

Only when your spirits really sink does a car suddenly stop.

Wow, I’m back on the E1. Since I need to build things up slowly again and I’m still walking a bit stiff, I decide to take a small hut. I’d rather not force it.

Hmm, nobody around. The man who gave me the lift got out and called a phone number written on a piece of paper. “The owner will be here in 10 minutes,” and then he left. OK?

He didn’t speak a word of English. But I managed anyway!
