The Snow Decides
9:08 AM
The snow is still too deep to walk properly. You take three steps and then sink down to your knees. At first you think, this isn’t too bad—but then the impact of the backpack throws you off balance, pulling you backward or sideways. Knees and feet take quite a beating. I sat by the roadside for an hour, asking myself which way I should hitchhike. Forward? Or back? Forward? Or back?……
I spoke with other hikers and they said no one can keep going in the snow. It’s better to postpone everything by two weeks. That leads to the next choice. Flying home costs just as much as a night in a hotel. Waiting at home is cheaper than sitting around here. Choices, choices, choices… now just the right one.

The decision is made. I hitchhiked back to Alta and booked a flight back to the Netherlands. Bridging two weeks in Norway would be hitting the jackpot—money better spent continuing the journey at a later stage.
