Blisters and Wind

7:55 AM

That was a rough night. Storming and freezing rain. A few times I thought, well, now the tent is really going to tear. But it held up well. Reindeer make a strange sound, kind of like a boomerang sound—one of those noises caused by shifting wind. They’re very skittish. From as far as 200 meters they already bolt. Breakfast was a pack of Adventure Food muesli. Good grief, that stuff is disgusting. Some kind of sticky sludge with a chemical aftertaste. Oh well, you eat what you have.

Pack everything up again—which, once again, doesn’t really want to work—and try to get back onto the road.

Journi Moment

There’s a cutting wind and snow is pouring down in buckets. If a car stops now, I’m getting in and riding to the next village. But no car stopped! Taking shelter here and there—under the canopy of a luxury beach house, in the verge, behind an advertising sign—you get easier about it. Now I was done. I have two massive blisters under my feet and, ironically, there’s a sign: hotel 3 km to the left.

Total: 86.7 – 16.5 km. The weather is terrible! The man who helped me is very kind; the woman, on the other hand, seems to be counting every cent. First you get a cup of coffee—free, yeah, free!! Then you hear the woman getting annoyed and I still have to pay €2.40.

The room is okay. Straight out of the year zero, but I have a heater and electricity. Even a toilet and a shower. Downside: I can’t stand upright. During the 50 km of walking on asphalt I developed blisters on the soles of both feet. I’ve punctured them and taped them up, but whether that will help remains to be seen. We’ll have to wait and see how tomorrow goes. The internet here is super bad. Blisters or not, I still have to push on a bit so I can reach a larger village, Olderfjord. Distance should be 48 km. From there I can make sure I get back onto the E1.
