At the Start of the West Highland Way
8:32 AM
And there we are, the two of us, standing at the starting point of the West Highland Way. We’re about to set off on our adventure into the Scottish Highlands, curious about everything we’re about to see.
At a little café opposite the start point, we sit down for breakfast first. New walkers keep arriving and leaving, taking photos by the pillar — it’s an attraction in itself. And honestly? We’re just as guilty of that 🥳😂.

8:50 AM
Along the path, wooden pillars suddenly appear, topped with gleaming, polished stones. As if someone quietly let art and nature merge here. The shapes are round and soft, as though the stones have been smoothed by years of rain and wind — but deliberately.

It took a while before we could leave the asphalt behind, but then finally: the mountains appear. And we soak it all in. The weather keeps improving too — a bit of sunshine, jacket off, smile on.

Every now and then we come across an honesty box — food and drinks you’re welcome to take, as long as you drop some cash into the box. Even ice creams! Just grab one and enjoy. Trust on the trail — we like that.

After 27 km, we can really feel it, and start looking for a nice place to sleep. Time to take off the backpacks and give our legs some rest.

Haha, just as we’re lying comfortably in our tent, a whole herd of cows comes wandering past. They’re so curious they almost crawl inside. Big noses pressed against the tent fabric, watchful eyes… Sorry ladies, this spot is already taken 😄.
